Second year Actuarial Studies scholar, Daniel Liu shares his experience at the Heavener International Case Competition.

6 weeks ago I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to represent UNSW on the global stage at the Heavener International Case Competition (HICC) hosted on campus by the University of Florida. The competition consisted of 19 universities from all across the world cracking cases on the American companies OneBlood, etectRx, and Zevo where my team, William Fernandez, Tony Wu, and Vivi Mi came 3rd overall.

After placing last in the first case, we came back to win both the second and third case in our division before making finals but the highlight of it all was the bright, witty, and crazy people that I had met from universities around the world.

Starting on Christmas Eve, we did approximately 10 practice cases ranging from 4 to 16 hours in length yet on the day there was a sudden change in format - the 2 longer cases would have 2 distinct questions, each question giving 2 minutes to present and 10 minutes of Q&A. This meant that we had to create 2 different slide decks for each case. This was very different to most other competitions with 10 minutes of presentation and 10 minutes of Q&A. It took us a while to adjust but I’m proud to say we made it in the end.

Outside of casing, HICC organised many social events through house parties, swimming and playing American Football at the beach, and even visiting an alligator farm. After the comp, Tony, Will, and I were lucky enough to find time to explore the rest of Florida visiting DisneyWorld, Universal Studios and even watching an NBA game!
